Description

Fragmentos is a work of remembrance created by Colombian sculptor Doris Salcedo following the signing of the peace agreement that ended more than 50 years of armed conflict between the Colombian government and the former FARC-EP.

Thirty-seven tons of rifles and ammunition surrendered by the guerrillas were melted down and transformed into the floor of Fragmentos, making it the first art and memory space of its kind in the country. To create this floor, Salcedo worked closely with women survivors of conflict-related sexual violence from the Red de Mujeres Víctimas y Profesionales. These women actively participated in molding the molten steel, imprinting their marks onto 1,296 rough metal tiles that now form the ground of the space.

Fragmentos exists simultaneously as a living work of art, a place of memory, and a space for ongoing artistic creation. By centering the experiences of survivors of sexual violence, Doris Salcedo sought to confront and overcome the testimonial injustice to which victims of this crime are so often subjected.

Fragmentos is located in the centre of Bogotá.
